The Irish Archives Resource is a publicly accessible website that allows users to search a wide range of Irish historical archives.
Aims and Objectives
Ireland has a great wealth of visual and written historical archives stretching back centuries. Increasingly these archives are now online but they are not always linked up to a central network. Recognising this, the Heritage Council set up the Irish Archives Resource in 2007 to provide a national integrated online archival service.
The IAR brings together and enables broader access to Ireland’s valuable collections, giving smaller archives an opportunity to showcase their content in a wider context with material from other larger archives.
Benefits
Usage of the site ranges from academic research to family genealogy. Historians and genealogists have easy access to primary source documents. Local communities can trace historical events in their area and individuals can discover their family history.
Update
The IAR’s regularly-updated Facebook, Twitter and Flikr sites provide fascinating and colourful glimpses into the extraordinary richness of our national collections. They also provide updates on additions to the collections and information on events such as exhibitions.
