What is the European Heritage Label?

The European Heritage Label is recognition of “sites” that represent the relationship between the site and the wider European community. These sites are part of the fabric of Europe and symbolise milestones in the creation of the Europe we know today.

The European Heritage Label is managed by the EU with new sites awarded bi-annually through a competitive process. The first sites awarded was in 2013. Currently there are 67 sites across Europe with European Heritage Label status. Once sites reach the EHL status, monitoring and continuous training takes place to maintain accreditation with the criteria of the EHL.

What is a “site”?

The European Heritage Label is different from other heritage recognition programmes such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. EHL sites are not just locations but objects or cultural practices.

A site can also be a group of buildings across countries such as monastic buildings of one order, it can be a document recognising rights that align with European ideals or cultural heritage such as practices or cultural of a community. Sites can be small documents or large buildings. There

What are some examples of a European Heritage Label site?

Sites that have been confirmed with status include Abbey of Cluny, France as one of the largest monastic networks in Europe. The village of Schengen in Luxembourg was recognised in 2017 for the location of the Schengen Agreement allowing free movement in Europe. The Charter of Law of Abolition of the Death Penalty, Lisbon, Portugal was one of the first examples of the permanent suspension of the death penalty being codified in a national legal system.

How will Ireland be part of this programme?

Currently there are no sites with European Heritage Label status in Ireland. In 2025 Ireland will submit one site for the 2026 intake for the European Heritage Label status.

Applications will to be the site submitted by Ireland for the 2025 process will open on 20th August. The process is an open call which any site can apply.
